Tom Bullock

The Ideal Bartender by Tom Bullock

$20.00

This hardcover edition of Tom Bullock's 1917 "The Ideal Bartender", the first cocktail book published by an African American author. Bullock is part of a rich legacy of Black pre-prohibition bartenders.

In 1913 Theodore Roosevelt sued a Michigan reporter for repeatedly claiming that Teddy was a drunk. When asked about his drinking habits, the former president claimed he enjoyed an occasional glass of wine and had only consumed two Mint Juleps since leaving the white house including "part of one" at Bullock's St. Louis Country Club bar. The following day, The St. Louis Post printed an editorial stating "Who was ever known to drink just a part of one of Tom’s?... To believe that... is to strain credibility too far."
